Keep your van and tools safe with Google Nest

It’s October, which means it’s National Home Security Month - a month designed to create awareness around the importance of home security.

It’s a very timely campaign as this is the time of year that it starts to get darker earlier and unfortunately, in turn there is a spike in home burglaries and van break ins.

A recent survey revealed that in the UK a van is broken into every 23 minutes and 1 in 3 tradespeople fall victim to tool theft each year. [1] The impact? It can cost tradesmen more than £3,000 and 72% are forced to take time off work after having their tools stolen. [2]

The team at Electrical Showroom want to make sure you are aware of the most popular measures you can take to secure your van and the belongings that matter most to you and your business.

These include:

  • Take your tools in at night. Bringing them into your home can be a safer alternative than keeping them in the van overnight.
  • Fit a safe into your van. It adds an extra layer of protection if a thief manages to break in.
  • Invest in a steering lock. Some thieves may target the van itself too, so fitting a steering lock can prevent anyone getting away with the van.
  • Fit van lock protection plates. Fitting protection plates can help prevent someone from gaining access to your work van.
  • Insure your tools. If the worst did happen, at least you can be covered for damage and you can get back to work sooner rather than later.

Another popular prevention measure is to install your own security system.

Google Nest offers a whole family of high-quality cameras to help you keep an eye on your van and your property from wherever you are. There are four cameras in total - two for the inside and two for the outside of your home. These fall into two ranges, standard and IQ, with IQ offering smarter features.

All 4 cameras come packed with helpful features such as:

24/7 live streaming

Be in the know 24/7 and view your live feed whenever and wherever from the Nest app in super clear 1080p HD video [3]. In bed and hear a sound outside? Night Vision allows you to see clearly what’s happening in the dark before you head outside. The Outdoor Cams are also weatherproof with a tamper-resistant design, so it will always keep monitoring, come rain or shine.

Helpful alerts

Nest Cams look for motion and listen for suspicious sounds and if it thinks that something’s up, it’ll send an alert to your smartphone. [4] If you miss an alert, you can see photos of activity from the last three hours for free. You can also set Activity Zones around your van so you can receive alerts when there is only movement in that specific zone (see Nest Aware section at the bottom of this blog).

Talk and listen

Nest Cams have a two-way built-in speaker and mic, so you can scare off suspicious visitors from wherever you are.

Nest Cam IQ Indoor and Nest Cam IQ Outdoor

As mentioned above, the Nest Cam IQ range have even smarter features such as:

  • Supersight to show you an extra-clear, close-up tracking shot of who’s there, plus a HDR, 4K sensor.
  • Talk and listen but in HD for better quality with noise suppression and echo cancellation.
  • Person Alerts to let you know when your camera sees or hears a person and sends a snapshot of the person it spotted.

Nest Cams can help bring you peace of mind knowing that there is an extra pair of eyes on your belongings and if something was to happen - you will be the first to know through the helpful alerts and ability to deter with the built-in mic. Plus you’ll also have high-quality video proof.

Nest Aware subscription

Nest Cams work great on their own, but they work even better when you purchase a Nest Aware subscription.

Subscriptions start at just £5 a month [5] for all the Nest cameras in your home. Now you’ll get more video history and intelligent alerts that matter [4]. Choose from two simple plans: Nest Aware, with 30 days of event video history, or Nest Aware Plus, with 60 days of event video history and 10 days of 24/7 video history. Person alerts can tell you when someone’s in your home. And you can create Activity Zones and get alerts whenever something happens there. [4]
